Baptisms at St Brigid’s Parish
Baptisms are celebrated most Sundays at St Joseph the Worker Church, Wulguru, at 10.30 am.
Families preparing for the Baptism of their first child are asked to make an appointment to meet with the priest before the Baptism. This is a chance to speak about the meaning of Baptism, the promises made by parents and godparents, and the place of the child in the life of the Church.
Families who belong to another parish should contact their home parish for Baptism preparation before arranging a Baptism at St Brigid’s.
One godparent must be a confirmed Catholic who is at least 16 years old. Other godparents or Christian witnesses must be baptised Christians and at least 16 years old.
Children are usually dressed in white for Baptism. This may be a baptismal gown, a white dress, a white shirt, or another suitable white garment.
More information can be found in the Baptism Enrolment Form below.
The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is the beginning of Christian life.
Through water and the Holy Spirit, a person is joined to Christ, freed from sin, and welcomed into the Church. For this reason, Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation.
In the Baptism of a child, parents ask the Church to receive their child into the life of faith. They promise to raise their child as a Catholic Christian, supported by the godparents and by the parish community.
During the celebration, the child is marked with the sign of the cross, baptised with water, anointed with sacred chrism, clothed in white, and given the lighted candle. These signs remind us that the baptised person now belongs to Christ and shares in the life of the Church.
For older children, teenagers, or adults seeking Baptism, the parish will arrange a suitable pathway of preparation.
